Smyth is a joke.
That is all. |

Some good points here Rich. The last thing this team needs is another year of the Horcoffs and the Belangers getting top ice time. Look at teams like Chicago. by the time Kane and Toews were in their third year they were running the show. If the Oil does hire Sutter I hope that he treats Hall and Eberle like veterans and rewards success with ice time. My biggest worry would be Nuge in the faceoff dot and the next most skilled option Gagner isn't exactly a stud in this area either. |

Agreed.
I wouldnt be opposed to bringing Hordi back... I get the feeling he's a great team guy and can be usefull for the Oilers for a bunch of games at least... not like he'll cost much.

Exactly. Both will be very effective on the PK but the time of seeing Horc on the PP is over...let's just all agree never to talk about Belanger on the PP ever again. As for Hordi I wouldn't mind keeping him as an extra but won't be heartbroken if he is gone. |

Oilers fans and the team itself needs to be honest about the upcoming season. Unless the team rips its soul out to get defensemen, this isn't a playoff team in 2012/2013. Which isn't all bad news. You get a coach like Cooper in place - You continue to move out the underperforming vets and bring in skilled kids who want to win. You try to acquire one legit Top 4 D man during the year. You draft high again in 2013.
If all this happens, things set up very well for the Oilers in 2013/2014. Management, if they explained it to fans, would be praised for being honest and for working towards a specific goal. Right now, management looks like a group of lazy, delusional clowns who have no plan. |

Has this been suggested before and if not I call first dibs on making a Hall and Oates reference. |

The highlight of Hordichuk's season was his appearance on Oil Change. |

I dont really care at this point, if this team doesnt make the playoffs, or barely miss in a thrilling fight to the very end, I want Tambi gonzo.

Richard Cloutier: Hangin' with Mr. Cooper? - Maxbone
A lot of he said she said about Smyth. The other day Oilers posters were telling us quite firmly that both sides wanted a two year term.
I'd still bet on Smyth returning, and that he's not the Osama bin Hitler-Hussein he's being painted as for not having been locked up at league minimum. |

He's a good guy... like I said, he knows when to fight and who to fight... he knows his role and doesnt hurt the team, Im not opposed to him on the team for another year, cheap and wont complain about icetime, etc...

2 years, 4.5 mill...
Oilers owe him nothing more at this point, and he should be doing them favors instead of vice versa.

We walked away from Linden and Oilers have to do the same. He has served his purpose. |

Stauffer was making noises the other day about why Smyth should sign for one year. If anyone knows what Oilers management is thinking, it's Stauffer. |

If the Oil can't acquire one legit, consistent top 4 defense man this summer I will be calling for Tambs head all year. My biggest problem with our rebuild is even with all of the offense we are bringing in and the highly rated defensive prospects we have. When these prospects enter the NHL they will be rookies, making rookie mistakes on a nightly basis while 4-5 year vets in Hall, Nuge, Eberle, Yakupov will be tearing it up.
I'm being realistic and understanding huge blockbuster trades for defense aren't going to happen and that Suter isn't going to sign here but unless an effort is made to have at least an average defense management isn't doing their job.
Completely agree with Robin that for ST sake we have to make playoffs are be pretty damn close. |

I would be perfectly fine with that.
Smyth is still a good player and can contribute, but I would be totally fine with giving his spot to PRV or Harti.

Oh my (frank), why is every big, mean player in CHL compared to Lucic? Lucic is the exception to big junior players with little offense, not the rule. Most of these guys have third-line potential at best. People need to stop taking Matheson's spitballing seriously. |

The only way Edmonton makes the playoffs in 2012/2013:
- Oilers hire Cooper or some other hot shot coach.
- Oilers sign UFA Justin Schultz, and he's everything we imagined.
- Oilers deal Ales Hemsky and the Oilers 1st round pick in 2013 for a real, legitimate, immediate Top 4 defenseman.
- Oilers sign some meat head like Konopka to be 4th line center, and sell Eric Belanger to Wal-Mart or something.
- Oilers re-sign Lennart Petrell and Ryan Smyth. Both have good seasons.
- One of Magnus Paajarvi or Teemu Hartikainen step up in a big way to play meaningful 2nd line minutes
- Oilers sign Harding to be Dubey's backup, burying Khabibulin in the minors.
Oilers roster in 2012/2013:
L1: Hall - Gagner - Yakupov
L2: Paajarvi or Hartikainen - Nuge - Eberle
L3: Smyth - Horcoff - Jones
L4: Eager - Konopka - Petrell
D1: Smid - Petry
D2: Legit Top 4 Guy - Justin Schultz
D3: Whitney - Nick Schultz
G1: Dubnyk
G2: Harding |
